Summer Reading with Scholastic

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,
This summer, Queens Collegiate will be participating in the Scholastic Summer Challenge, an online reading program that allows students to log the time they spend reading, enter to win prizes, and more.  Usernames and passwords were randomly generated for each student and were sent home with report cards.  Any student who needs their username or password can email Mrs. Silverstein at SilversteinELA@gmail.com.
Participation in the online site is optional, but we do expect each student to read at least one full-length book (novel, non-fiction, play, graphic novel, or a collection of poetry or short stories) over the summer. Countless studies have proven that independent reading correlates strongly with high academic achievement.  In the fall, we will host a celebration for students who participate and log their hours spent reading either online or on paper. To log in, please visit http://www.scholastic.com/summer/ and click on “Get Started!” under the “Kids” tab.
If you’re not sure where to start, check out the Scholastic Young Adult book list for ideas.  (The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins was a favorite among many of our students this year. For students who read and enjoyed that series, try other dystopian lit like Divergent by Veronica Roth or Unwind by Neal Shusterman.)  Any students or parents/guardians looking for recommendations in specific genres can email Mrs. Silverstein at SilversteinELA@gmail.com.
Have a great summer–we look forward to hearing about your favorite new books in the fall!
