HS Courses for 3rd Trimester

Dear Parents, Students, & Guardians,

The following are our course offerings for the 3rd trimester of 2010-2011 school year.  This trimester will run from March 21 to June 13, 2011.

Physical Education offerings:

Zero period big gym (begins at 7:40, every other day)
1st or 2nd period big gym
7th period co-ed swim

English offerings:

1. Dystopian Literature with Ms. Silverstein (9/10th grade, not taking Regents in June)

Course Description:  In this course, you will read books and short stories about people who tried to create the perfect community–and failed.  We will also study examples of failed Utopias from history.  In the end, you will create your own perfect community, and predict how it could all go horribly wrong.

Possible texts include, but are not limited to:
The Giver
Harrison Bergeron, a short story by Kurt Vonnegut
The Hunger Games

Assessments:  Critical lens essays using our texts; create a utopia; write a short story set in your utopia that exposes its problems

2. Outsiders Literature with Ms. Kaufman

Course description:  This course will explore works of literature that excluded individuals from the social circles of their societal groups.

Texts:
Outsiders
Speak
Catcher in the Rye or Lord of the Flies

3. English as a Second Language with Ms. Kim

Course description:  This course will explore reading, writing, speaking and listening in English for non-native English speakers.

Texts and assessments will be determined by student need and interest.

4. The American Dream, Regents Prep with Ms. Kaufman

Course description:  This course will explore American literature as we prepare for critical lens essays and Regents requirements.

Texts:
Raisin in the Sun
To Kill A Mockingbird
A variety of poems, speeches and other literature

5. The American Dream, Regents Prep with Ms. Micillo

Course description:  This course will explore American and classical literature as we prepare for critical lens essays and Regents requirements.

Texts:
The Crucible
The Great Gatsby
Antigone
Short stories and poetry from Edgar Allen Poe

6. The American Dream, Regents Prep with Ms. Silverstein & Ms. White

Course description:  This course will explore American literature as we prepare for critical lens essays and Regents requirements.

Texts:
The Crucible
The Great Gatsby
Raisin in the Sun

Elective offerings:

1. Criminal Psychology taught by Ms. King
In this course students will be exploring basic principles of psychology and applying them to criminal situations.  This course builds upon the Forensics and Science and the Law courses.

2. Health for Life

This is the required health course for all high school students.  If you have not yet taken health, this course is require for graduation.

3. AP Microeconomics taught by Ms. Bizarro (this counts as required Economics course, and could be college credit if the student passes the AP exam in May with a 4, or 5)

The purpose of an AP course in Microeconomics is to provide a thorough understanding of the principles of economics that apply to the functions of individual decision makers, both consumers and producers, within the larger economic system. It places primary emphasis on the nature and functions of product markets, and includes the study of factor markets and of the role of government in promoting greater efficiency and equity in the economy.

4. Musical Theatrical Productions with Ms. Silverstein & Ms. Wingate–8th & 9th period modified schedule.  See Ms. Silverstein for details and contract.

This course will be a credit bearing course exploring how to present a famous, popular musical on stage in a production.

5.  Piano keyboarding with Ms. Wingate

This course will count as a music credit, and will teach students how to read music and play piano.
